ART STANDARDS

Art lessons are focused on different art concepts depending on the grade level. Each lesson is designed to build on art concepts as students progress through the grades. Docents are asked to incorporate grade-level concepts into their lessons. View the progression table, here.

UNDERSTANDING ART CONCEPTS

The Issaquah School Foundation (ISF) provides definitions and instruction for docents in understanding the elements of art, the principles of design, art concepts and artistic movements with art media examples:

ONGOING TRAINING
There are many opportunities throughout the year for you to learn more and get further training as an art docent, including Art Conferences in October and February. "Local artists teach free classes at Art East to support volunteer Art Docents at every school in the Issaquah School District." Training fees are not paid for by the PTSA. You can find more information and how to register for those classes here:

SPECIFIC TO DISCOVERY

Handbook
The Discovery Art Docent Handbook provides you with a planning guide to help you get started. View it here.

ART LESSONS by grade
We've compiled a library of lesson plans that have worked well for our Art Docents in the past. Please click the link below for a catalog of PDF/Powerpoint lesson plans by grade level.
(This project is ongoing, please check back for more content. If you have a lesson you'd like to include, please contact us.)

Go to: K-5th Grade Art Lessons

In addition, Art Binders, complete with sample projects from previous years, are available to check out. Please contact Jeannie Sprague for more information.

Clay and Glass Tiles
Only 4th and 5th grade classes are allowed to work with wet clay and glass tiles. Only a few volunteers are trained on the school's kiln. Because Kilns produce tremendous heat, you must be trained in order to operate it.  If you have kiln training, please fill out this form so that we can add you to our volunteer resource list.

Budget
Your budget for the school year is $70 per class, which will be reimbursed through the PTSA. Please keep your receipts.

Supplies and Reimbursement
The supply closets are located in the hallway near the Kiln. You may use any supplies available in the closet, but you must sign and record the items that were taken so that we can replenish supplies. If you need to purchase supplies, you can be reimbursed up to the allotted budget amount per class. Please submit this reimbursement form and your original receipts by placing them in the pink folder in the PTSA mailbox in the teacher's trailer (located in the parking lot).

Background Check
Please make sure that your background check has been cleared before you begin teaching lessons in the classroom. A completed background check is required to volunteer in the school. You can check with Debbie Alberts, albertsd@issaquah.wednet.edu, if you don't know your status.
